  • I am as nervous now as I was then, but how can you say that I am insane? If anything this disease has keened my senses, not weakened them. You will notice how I tell this story in such a calm manner.
  • I am as nervous now as I was then, but how can you say that I am insane? If anything this disease has keened my senses, not weakened them. You will notice how I tell this story in such a calm manner.
  • "WHO'S THERE?"
  • I honestly did love the elderly man. He had never done me wrong by any means, but there was just something about him I couldn't handle. It was his wretched eye. Always watching and when he placed it upon me, it sent chills directly up my spine. For it was not his gold I wanted, but the eye itself!
  • So, very wisely, each night of the week at midnight, I would cautiously open the door of his quarters and watch him. Oh how slick I would perform this mischievous task. After I got in, which usually took me about an hour, I would very quietly open the lantern, and shine the single beam of light on the old man's terrible eye.
  • Twas the eighth night and I was more cautious I had ever been.  I was trying to keep myself calm to the best of my ability when my  thumb slipped on the tin fastening of the lantern, right as I was opening it.  At that moment the elderly man sat up and scaredly said, "Who's there?"  I stayed stiff as a corpse for one whole hour. For he did not lie down. He just stayed sitting and listening. Making the odd silent groan. He was facing tremendous fear. I was going in for the kill!
  • The deed was done. The elderly man was now dead and I would no longer have to stare into that terrible and wretched eye. Still think of me as insane? Well,no more, after I have told you what I did to the body. What did I do to the body exactly? I  cut off all of the limbs and decapitated the head clean off.  I then hid the corpse under the floor boards. Then upon the door I heard a knock. It was three police officers. I had nothing to fear though.  I offered the officers a place to sit and something to drink. They gladly took me up on my offer .
  • While the officers enjoyed there fellowship and drink, I began to hear a strangely loud and deep thump. It then hit me that it was the beating of the elderly man's heart! I became overwhelmed and started to panic. I was out of control and acting absurd, but the officers didn't mind.  I could no longer handle it and I admitted it to them, "For it was I. I committed the crime!" I tore the planks open and revealed to them what I had done and that is how I wound up here. Cold, nervous, and alone.
