  • "My dad left when I was seven" (0:43)
  • Just because some students are different at Black Rock than other schools, that doesn't define who they are in the future. The situations and challenges they've faced and how they've handled those challenges determines the person they will become.
  • Even though Summer was behind in her grades, she didn't that let define who she was. She continued to push to do her best and make up for the grades she had. She didn't let her difference from others define who she was and defied the stereotypes to become successful.
  • Summer has been through many challenges that have made her emotional. Because her father left, she started to live with her grandparents. These conditions that she is in are usually associated with poverty. Her not living with her parents and her father running away are examples of how she is different from other people in society. She still worked hard throughout the rest of her high school years and continued even though she was different from others. She kept pursuing her dreams and didn't let the difference she had from other students hold her back.
