Storyboard Text

  • What are you gonna do about it?
  • If you hurt him you will have another thing coming.
  • Please do not hurt my baby!
  • "There's smoke coming from my forest yonder!"
  • We must put the fire out before it travels to the next town!
  • We will work together side by side to put out this fire.
  • TJ is being attacked by everyone for theft. RW and Melvin have accused him of the break-in and murder at the store. The white community believe that only TJ could have done it, because a white child would never do such a thing. The community is ready to kill TJ and his family in their yard.
  • Lightning is not the only thing that can start a fire.
  • The fire is out.
  • TJ has gone with the sheriff, but at least he is alive for now.
  • Papa sneaks off with his gun, because he thinks it is the only way to keep TJ from being lynched, however instead he sets fire to his cotton field. This action distracts the mob from hurting others, because they think lightning has started the fire and now they must keep it from spreading to their crops.
  • Here the community works side by side, whites and blacks, to save their community. The Coreys and the Logans worked together and showed that in the midst of danger everyone is the same and has the same goal, at this moment differences do not matter.
  • "What happened to T.J. in the night I did not understand, but I knew that it would not pass. And I cried for those things which had happened in the night and would not pass." -Cassie
  • Cassie now knows that Papa started the fire to keep TJ from being lynched. Mama explains that TJ has been taken by the sheriff. No one knows if TJ will be killed or not. Cassie understands the truth of racism and how cruel and mean people can be.
  • Cassie gets why the land is important, because it keeps them from living in complete poverty. They may still struggle to pay their debts, but they do not have to depend on someone else to have a place to live. The land is beautiful, and it gives them freedom.
