Later that afternoon I decided to get out of the hotel. I got a cab outside the hotel, but I didn't have the faintest damn idea where I was going. I had no place to go. It was only Sunday, and I couldn't go home till Wednesday or Tuesday the soonest.
Such a terrible liar. I hope you realize it now. FYI the Dicksteins were these people that had the other apartment on our floor.
I went to the closest bar to get my mind off crazy ideas by getting drunk. I got home drunk and told the elevator boy in a casual voice to take me to the Dicksteins. The elevator boy was sort of on the stupid side and he had the elevator doors all shut and all, and was all set to take me up, and then he turned around...
They ain't in.
That's all right. I'm supposed to wait for them. I'm their nephew.
I got off at our floor limping like a bastard and started walking over toward the Dicksteins' side. Then, when I heard the elevator doors shut, I turned around and went over to our side. Then I took out my door key and opened our door, quit as hell. Then very, very carefully and all, I went inside and closed the door. I really should've been a crook.
Remember, I am Houlden Caulfied and this is my STORY.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I AM REALLY A CROOK
