  • Robert E. Lee grew up in one of the most elegant plantations in Virginia, Shirley Plantation. He lived a wealthy life and eventually became the General-in-Chief of the Confederate Army in the American Civil War.
  • Is Responsible for Own Fate
  • Robert E. Lee was a very accomplished man, and both Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis offered the position of General-in-Chief of their armies. The Southerners looked up to him as a role model.
  • Peripetia
  • Robert E. Lee spent a whole night contemplating which side he should join. He wished to remain neutral, because he supported the North, but he did not want to fight his own state, Virginia, a Southern state in the Confederacy.
  • Anagnorisis
  • Robert E. Lee was responsible for his own fate because he made the decision to join the Confederacy.
  • At the famous Battle of Gettysburg, the Union armies defeated the Confederate armies. After this battle and the Battle of Vicksburg, the war would turn in favor of the North. These two battles marked the turning point of the American Civil War.
  • At this point, Robert E. Lee realizes that he is in huge danger and needs to retreat. He notices that the Northern army has grown in power under General George Meade.
