Every year in a small village there is a lottery held in June. A crowd gathers to see which name will be chosen. Mr Summers and Mr Graves are in charge of the lottery.
Mr Martin and his son are holding the box for Mr Summers while he mixes the names up. Everyone is anxious to see who is picked.
Mrs Hutchinson is upset because she thinks Mr Summers didnt give Bill enough time to choose his ticket.
The climax occurs when Tessie draws the black ticket. This means she will die.
The crowd gathers around her with their stones.
