Point of View
The point of view of the story is Third Person Narritive. You see how all of the towns people act and react to the lottery taking place, and who gets picked.
The story takes place in a small town of 300 people, where every June 27th. The towns people all gather in the town square and choose their names from a small black box. "The original paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago, and the black box now resting on the stool had been put into use even before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in town, was born. Mr. Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box."
The theme of The Lottery is that tradition can completly change a groups out look on the world and can make them do illegal and scary things. Public murder via stoning is not frowned apon or deemed crazy.
