The economy in the North came from the many industries like mining and lumber mills. They were able to have lots of workers because of the immense urbanization. This means that lots of people moved to a certain city or town to rapidly populate it.
German and Irish immigrants were forced to do lots of labor in the north including laying railroad tracks, and working on farms. Woman worked as house maids.
Although African Americans in the North were free, there was still lots of segregation and discrimination towards all black people. It was very hard for them to find jobs, and even though they were not slaves, they were still forced into very laborious jobs.

The southern United States profited mainly from their cash crops. The south was full of plantations, that grew things like cotton and tobacco. Over workers slaves were the workers that were forced to do the hard labor, while rich white men were the owners
Slaves had very few rights and had to follow the slave code( a set of laws regarding oly slaves).If a slave did anything wrong their owners could seriously harm or even kill them without getting in trouble. Slaves were also way over worked and treated inhumanely.
African Americans in the south had a very hard life. Most of them were slaves or had run away, or bought their freedom. Free Africans were often mistaken for slaves because they were black, and because of the fugitive slave rule they could be taken as slaves again.
