Jing-Mei's mother's friends tell her that they have come into contact with her half sisters. They tell her she must travel to them and tell them all about the mother that they weren't able to grow up with. (Jing-Mei's mother recently passed away so she must go instead of her.)
Jing-Mei remembers the story her mother told her. Her mother was fleeing from a war and during the difficult journey had to leave all of her luggage and twin babies. All she had left were the three silk dresses she was wearing.
Jing-Mei travels to see her sisters for the first time and they all see traits of their mother in each other. She will continue to tell them about their mother's life as they get to know each other.
