  • Pathos: “After they spend several painful minutes failing to elicit any response from their peers, I declare the demonstration over. I ask the two volunteers how they felt. Terrible, they say. Embarrassed, rejected.” -You Are a Conformist (That Is, You Are Human). Teenagers are ultimately influenced by  their peers’ judgement and, whether it be good or bad, they act on that judgement. They can only plead for attention until they get some sort of acknowledgement - otherwise, they depress themselves until it becomes too late.
  • Jay was bullying Maddy in front of her group of friends for being a nerd, unlike the majority of the school.
  • Hyperbole of this terrible bullying situation to convey the feeling of angst teenagers feel when they aren’t conformed.

  • Ethos: “Normative influences work because we depend on social acceptance to survive and thrive.” - You Are a Conformist (That Is, You Are Human) This quote along with the name of the article states that it is human nature to conform. Being a teenager myself, right in the beginning of my freshman year of high school, I can tell you that when we conform we develop some social acceptance which drives our passion to live comfortably.
  • Conformity
  • Labeling to directly relate this student to the audience and help them understand the message that conformity helps teenagers to thrive.
  • Maddy's friend, Gracie tells her to never listen to Jay again and that she is so much better than he says. "There's nothing wrong with being a nerd and loving what you love. We're all nerds, right? That's why we're best friends."

  • Logos: “Conforming to society provides protection from threats. There are strength in numbers and just like our ancestors had to form societies to protect them from wild animals and other threats, societies today protect the group for threats against resources. When a society is strong and well managed and each member conforms it provides a wall of protection against threats to natural resources.” - 13 Pros and Cons of Conformity in Society. This explicitly states that without conformity, nations would be failing everyday because of separation. It is literally essential for us to conform and protect our barriers.
  • Gracie goes back to confornt Jay on being a bully and defend Maddy.
  • Symbolism relates this small encounter with Jay and Gracie to the bigger, nationwide/societal issue of protection.
