  • When Ponyboy was in the waiting room and reporters were with him.
  • When Ponyboy visited Johnny in the hospital.
  • When Johnny passed away.
  • "Then the reporters and the police came" (Hinton 100). "Now there was three of us sitting in the waiting room waiting to hear how Dally and Johnny were" (Hinton 100).
  • When Dally gets shot.
  • "We went in practically on tiptoe, because the quietness of the hospital was scaring us" (Hinton 119). "Johnny was lying still, with his eyes close" (Hinton 119).
  • When Randy showed up in Ponyboy's room.
  • "Johnny just looked dead" (Hinton 148). "The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died" (Hinton 148).
  • When Ponyboy finds the note Johnny wrote for Dally.
  • "And even as the policemen's guns spit fire into the might I knew that was what Dally wanted" (Hinton 154). "He was dead before he even hit the ground" (Hinton 154)
