Socs vs. Greasers
Johnny is the only gang member who can really relate to Ponyboy and the stuff that he likes, which makes his special to Pony. Johnny always gives Pony good advise to help Pony when he's in bad situations. But when Johnny kills someone while him and Pony are in a rumble, Pony has no choice but to run away with him. When they are on the run they grow closer and learn more about each other, like how Johnny actually cares about his parents.
In the beginning of the story, Dally is one of Ponyboy's least favorite gang members. But all of that changes once he helps Pony and Johnny get out of a tuff situation. Dally had always challenged Ponyboy's tuffness and made it harder for Pony to get away from being a mean Greaser, but when Dally helps him and Johnny run away, Ponyboy has a newfound respect for Dally. Dally saved him.
Every day, Ponyboy knows that he's at the constant risk of being jumped by the Socs. This causes fear and Ponyboy forgets to use his head when he does get jumped. Ponyboy can't help that the Socs hate him, that's just how it's always been. This makes him regret being a Greaser because of the way that they treat him. In the end of the story, we see that Ponyboy is done and quits caring about the Socs and since Ponyboy has stopped fighting, there is no more conflict for him.
