UbD Understanding by Design
Stage 1: Identify Desired Results •Consider goals, examine standards, review expectations •Focus on "transfer of learning" •Engage them in thoughtful "meaning making"
Stage 2: Determine Assessment Evidence •Ask them to apply their learning to a new situation to assess their understanding •True understanders can explain, interpret, apply, demonstrate, empathize, and have self-knowledge
Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction •Key words: transfer, meaning making, acquisition •Give students opportunities to draw inferences and make generalizations for themselves. •Be a coach of understanding
