  • One evening during the supreme madness of carnival season, Fortunado was encountered with intention. He was asked if he could inspect some amontillado that was recently purchased.
  • Climax
  • In an attempt of reverse-psychology, he persuades Fortunado to come taste and validate the wine.
  • Falling Action
  • As they travel down in to the catacombs to the amontillado, he uses the moldy walls and Fortunado's health as more reverse psychology to have him leave. This manages to make him want to continue, and things go just as planned.
  • The intoxicated and sick Fortunado is pushed into the recess of the catacomb wall and chained to the wall, preventing his escape.
  • As the chained Fortunado is sobering up, he is realizing that he is being sealed off in a grave of his own. He starts to panic to the point of losing consciousness.
  • Let me out, man.
  • The narrator reflects upon his actions, he his heart "grew sick". He feels remorse for killing Fortunado, but he must not go back or tell anyone.
