Jonas is playing catch with his friend, Asher, using an apple. While Asher was throwing the apple back to him, Jonas saw the apple change. He is starting to see the color red.
At the Ceremony of the Twelves, the children were getting their jobs assigned to them. Jonas, number 19, gets skipped over, and he is very nervous. The Chief Elder says that he has been selected to become the new Receiver of Memory.
The Giver gives his first memory to Jonas. It is about sledding down a snowy hill. He also gives Jonas memories of animals. Jonas enjoys the memories and they are in full color.
The Giver gives Jonas a very bad memory. It is about warfare and death. Jonas offers to take the pain away from The Giver on a bad day, and he gives him the worst memory yet.
The Giver shows Jonas what release is, and it is when you kill the other person with a needle. He also tells him that Rosemary, the previous Receiver of Memory, was his daughter. She asked to be released and puts the needle in herself.
Jonas hears his dad saying that Gabriel was going to be released, so he runs away from the community with him. He is trying to get past the boundary so that the memories of pain difference get shared with everyone. Gabriel is suffering from hypothermia and Jonas gives him his jacket to make him warm.
