Jacobs was a house slave for the Flints. When the Flints decided to have her and her children live in the house and denied her use of her bed, she decided to escape so they could not use her children against her.
Jacobs waited until it was half past midnight to go through the window and escape to her grandmother's house.
She left her children with her trusted friend Sally, since she knew her grandmother would be mad she escaped. She left and kept where she was hiding a secret so no one could be accountable.
Mr. Flint was off looking for Jacob's at her grand mother's and afterwards put a 300$ reward for her. Having the whole town look for her too.
One night while running away from pursuers by her first hiding place she went in a bush and got bite by a reptile. She ended up in a sympathetic slaveholder's house in a storeroom.
Mr.Flint put her family in jail to try to get information on her and to lure her to turn herself in. She almost gave in but her brother told her to stay put.
Don't be so chick'n-hearted! (Jacobs,410)
