  • Effect of Parental Occupations on our Professional Verdict
  • Children tend towards selecting a career that their parents have already succeeded in. Hope Jahren, a renowned geobiologist, for example, credits her  physicist father for her interest in science.
  • Childhood experiences related to parental occupations are a large factor in this pattern, such as 'Bring your child to work days', or, in the example of Hope Jahren, growing up in her father's lab
  • Bring your child to work day
  • Research done by the Facebook Research Team and by Koji Tanaka and Kazuo Ogawa of the Japanese Journal of Educational Psychology proved these results- that a child is likely to follow their parents' footsteps career-wise, finding that the ratios of children following in their parents professions were significantly high.
  • Interview
  • Hey Nandini! How are you? How are you enjoying 10th grade? I was wondering if you wanted to become a physicist because of your father? Was it only your decision or did some experiences with your scientist father help you understand your passion for physics? - M
  • Re: Interview
  • Dear Mahika, I'm fine! 10th grade is great! To answer your question, yes I do think that is probably why I like physics. Since my dad has a business related to mechanical engineering, I have always been inclined towards it, and we are always discussing it. During barbecues or road trips or any other family time at least 60% of our conversations are physics. And since it's the 'interesting' kind of physics, I'm inclined towards it now.” What about you? - Nandini

  • My mom's a teacher, but I'm in Human Resources. I think that my mom had a huge affect on my career path though... The empathy, patience, and social skills reuired for teaching are reciprocated in my job here in Human Resources- and so my mom's choice of profession affected my job choice as well, just not that I took up the exact same career as her.
  • Therefore, parents have a lot more to do with our career choices than we think- sometimes even unintentionally they can influence our decisions. Most of us will end up in similar professions to our parents because of this.
