  • Madame Loisel, a woman in 1880s France longs to be rich and live a fancy life. One day her husband comes home and says that he has tickets for a fancy party. Mathilde is upset because she does not have a fancy dress, she does not want to look poor.
  • Climax
  • Monsieur Loisel gives Mathlide 400 Francs to buy a dress, she buys a very nice dress but now she realizes she does not have any jewelry to wear. Her husband suggests she ask her wealthy friend Madame Forestier.
  • Falling Action
  • My life has been so hard, we had to spend all of our money on a new necklace worth 38,000 Francs!!
  • Mathlide has a great time at the party but the necklace goes missing. They look for days and days but they cant find it so they decide to replace it with an identical one, leaving them virtually penniless, it takes 10 years of hard labor to pay it off
  • Resloution
  • After 10 years of hard labor they have finally paid off the 38,000 Francs that the necklace cost.
  • Madame Loisel runs into her rich friend on her way to town and tells her what happened with the necklace
  • Madame Forestier apologizes and explains that the necklace was a fake and that it was only worth 500 Francs This leaves the reader to ponder the irony of the situation.
  • It was a fake necklace, only worth 500 Francs!
