  • Secretary of State for War
  • Prime Minister

  • Liberals and the War
  • July 1916 he became secretary of state for war, and was increasingly critical of Asquith. Lloyd George was leading Britain’s war effort.
  • Conservatives in War
  • In December 1916, he became Prime Minister replacing Asquith, with the help of Conservative and Labour leaders. Lloyd George took a far more active role in strategy and repeatedly clashed with military and naval leaders.
  • Labour and the War
  • The Liberals were hit by David Lloyd George's effects of electoral reform and the split in the Liberal party. This spouted from Asquith's and DLG's disagreements.
  • They gained from the inclusion in Asquith and David Lloyd George's coalition government and consistent support for the party was the patriotic vote.
  • Sir Edward Grey, the Foreign Secretary. British in the war caused an influential Independent Labour Party (socialist) members within the Labour Party to condemn him for secret pledges of military support for France.
