  • Mother was a very cautious woman. She wanted the best for Mattie and wanted to keep her safe. When Mattie offered to take care of some bigger chores for Mother, Mother was very hesitant. When Mattie offered to go to market and get food Mother said this, "I was thinking of just sending her to the Ludington's at Gwynedd. You encourage her to go deeper into town." Mother Frowned. This shows that she is cautious and doesn't like Mattie being far away or alone.
  • Mother is very strict. She likes things done correctly and wants things to be organized and get done. She constantly stresses about business and is always doing something. She is strict toward Mattie most because she depends on Mattie to help her and Eliza out. "Mother strode into the room carrying wood for the fire." She said, " If she doesn't get here soon you'll have to do her chores as well as your own Mattie." This text is from the book showing that mother likes things done on time.
  • Mother was very hardworking. She cleaned, cooked, worked, served, and barely ever slept, She was always working on a task or chore. She hardly had time for rest during daytime. "You're too tired to go to market", is a line said by Mattie's grandfather talking to Mother. This shows that she works extremely hard and everyone knows it.
  • Overall Mattie's Mother was a very caring person. She wasn't always the nicest but everything she did was out of heart. When she was sick she got rid of Mattie to keep her safe. She was strict and wanted things right but she was also a very loving person who worked very hard for her family.
