Mr. Poe, an old family friend, looking very sad, soon arrives at the beach unexpectedly, and brings some bad news. Holding a stone in her hand, Violet feels embarrassed that she even had thoughts of playfully throwing it at Mr. Poe.
I'm afraid I have some very bad news for you children.
Though Violet understood what Mr. Poe said, she also thought that Mr. Poe was playing a terrible joke on her and her other siblings.
Your parents, have perished in a terrible fire.
Klaus, also thinking that Mr. Poe has somehow misspoken, was having trouble processing what he said to them.
Perished, means killed.
We know what the word perished means.
The fire department arrived, of course, but they were too late. The entire house was engulfed in fire. It burned to the ground.
In his mind, Klaus was imagining all of the books in his family's library going up in flames. Now he was never going to be able to finish reading all of the books like he'd hoped.
Mr. Poe is the executor of the Bauldelaire's estate so that means that he is in charge of their huge fortune and figuring out where the children will go next. When Violet is old enough however, she will be in charge of the fortune.
I was sent to retrieve you here, and to take you to my home, where you'll stay for some time while we figure things out.
