Storyboard Text

  • On Christmas Eve, while Scrooge is in his firm, a little boy sings him a Christmas Carol, but Scrooge chases him away and scares him, illustrating his unloving character.
  • "Scrooge seized the ruler with such energy of action that the singer fled in terror, leaving the key hole to the fog and even more congenial frost."(624).
  • Indirect Characterization
  • Scrooge is brought back to his past and he sees how he was all alone for Christmas. He starts to regret treating people badly, and in this case, he is sorry for being mean to the little boy that was Christmas caroling the prior night because the boy was alone, and Scrooge is reminded of what it is like to be alone.
  • Internal Conflict
  • Poor boy.
  • Nothing, I just wish that I had given the boy at my door something last night.
  • What is it?
  • The symbolism here is that the spirit is a giant, so is representing the country England since it had colonies all over the world making the British empire was massive. The children hidden under the spirits cloak, Ignorance and Want are supposed to represent the poor people and criminals that England is trying to hide, and Ignorance has DOOM written on his forehead because those who were ignorant and without education(which cost money back then, there were no public schools) were doomed to stay poor because they didn't have an education to help them.
  • Symbolism
  • What is that under your cloak spirit?
  • Want, and Ignorance, the children of man. I can see that DOOM is written on Ignorance's forehead.
  • " 'I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, Present, and Future.' "(663)
  • EBENEEZER SCROOGE
  • The Ghost of Christmas Past brings Scrooge to his grave, and Scrooge realizes that he has not benefitted from his avarice and it has made people hate him.Realizing this Srooge then vows to change his ways and to follow the lessons that the three Spirits taught him. This shows how everyone is capable of change because Scrooge decides to change from a greedy person to a generous one.
  • Theme
  • Because of Scrooges' nasty and greedy personality, no one grieved his death, and even though he was rich, no good had come of it. The theme here is "The effects of greed" because Scrooge had been greedy, but nothing good had come of it and he was left all alone in the end.
  • Theme
  • "He thought, if this man could be raised up now, what would be his foremost thoughts. Avarice, hard-dealing, griping cares. They have brought him to a rich end, truly. He lay, in the dark empty house, with not a man, a woman, or a child, to say that he was kind to me in this or that, and for the memory of one kind word I will be kind to him."
  • In Stave 4, Dickens uses indirect characterization through dialogue between three businessmen when they hear of Scrooges death. They decide that they will only go to the funeral for the food because they don't want to go for Scrooges' sake since he was so mean and greedy. No one really liked Scrooge because most families and people are happy he is gone so that they wont have to put up with him for any longer.
  • Will you go to the funeral?
  • Indirect Characterization
  • Only if a lunch is provided!
