The Byzantine Emperor, Justinian l, wanted to restore the original Roman Empire. He began by sending a fleet of ships to northern Africa to recapture the region.
There were many people against Justinian's decision, resulting in many riots and rebels. This created a threat to Justinian l and his wife, Theodora.
"We can't loose hope! We have to stay determined and not flee!"
Justinian's top general, Belisarius, and his troops, attacked and slaughtered the rioters.
Justinian l dies in 565, leaving Rome bankrupt. Expanding was very expensive, and he expanded too far for the government to effectively administer the land.
The western provinces fell once again to migrating tribes after Justinian l's death, as well.
The Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church then split, because of the churches has different beliefs. The Orthodox Church was in the east, while the Roman Catholic Church was in the west.
