  • Alice and Gallaudet
  • Surely. We should think of something.
  • I can teach her but there must be others like her!
  • BRAIDWOOD ACADEMY
  • Gallaudet goes to Europe
  • THIS IS UNBELIEVEABLE. IM LEAVING
  • DO WHAT YOU WANT.
  • Gallaudet and Clerc
  • That would be fantastic!!!
  • I can come with you to the States and help you!
  • It started when Dr. Cogswell had a child named Alice that became deaf at a young age. Thomas Gallaudet, their neighbor, saw Alice not being able to play with other kids because she could not communicate. He brought her over and decided to teach her how to write in the dirt and he saw how much she enjoyed it. Then on he knew that Alice should be educated.

  • Cogswell and others were able to send Gallaudet to Europe to learn what he needed to educate the deaf. However, when he tried getting aid from Braidwood, he was in shock as they cared more about money and that they wanted to keep their method a secret. He left Braidwood and went to a lecture on the French method educating the deaf. There he met Laurent Clerc.

  • Thomas Braidwood
  • Sicard, who was leading the lecture, invited Gallaudet to the French National Institute where he could study, but Gallaudet knew he had no time. Clerc said that he would go with Gallaudet to America, which was not apart of the plan, but with some discussion with Sicard, he finally agreed. They arrived in the states and the first deaf school opened.

  • Thank You!!!!
  • Laurent Clerc
  • Gallaudet and Clerc both taught classes and sign language was used. Clerc used fingerspelling and signs that he brought, but found out that his students modifying his signs to their preference. From then on, the school begins to grow and deaf schools begin to establish all over America.
  • Without Gallaudet's work, there probably wouldn't have been a school for the deaf until many years later. Many deaf people would have no education unless they or their parents could afford sending them off to a deaf school or getting a tutor. If Gallaudet, there probably wouldnt be ASL.
  • Through Gallaudet's work, sign language was able to flourish and eventually become an official language. His first step making a deaf school contributed to the gradual acceptance of ASL and the deaf. Without this baby step, it would have taken many more years. But thanks to Gallaudet and many more, the dear were able to get a school just for them.
