  • Knowledge about the Natives
  • The Europeans are Coming!
  • You strange people must be spawns of the Devil! Get out of the way!
  • Why do you invade our lands, take what you want, and kill with no mercy?
  • English Colonization
  • The Mississipians were the first to encounter the Europeans. They were craftsmen and created jewelry and pottery. They also made tools out of stone, wood, and bone. These natives used large scale farming. They were an advanced society that lived in villages ruled over by tribal chiefs and built mounds for religious ceremonies. When the Europeans came, many were killed due to diseases that the Europeans accidentally brought over. The Europeans also had better weapons and defeated the natives easily in battle.
  • The Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto and his men were the first to discover parts of Georgia. He, along with many others, came to the New World seeking gold. The other main reasons were that they wanted to spread Christianity and have freedom of religion (God) and to become famous for claiming land for their country (glory). When the Europeans came, they treated the natives brutally and killed thousands, through combat and diseases the Europeans unintentionally brought.
  • As other countries started building settlements in the New World, England settled along the Atlantic coastline of what is now the United States. They made profit by practicing mercantilism, which is exporting more than you import. They also sold crops and other materials that were in the New World to England (like tobacco). Because Georgia was between fighting colonies, it acted as a buffer colony. It blocked colonies from invading each other.
