NASA plans a trip to Mars 20 years from now that they predict will take approximately 3 years to explore the planet and build a base. However, there has been a debate about where they should land on the planet.
Should we choose to land into an already explored area by rovers, we know that the area will be relatively safe.
Or, we can take the risk of landing somewhere we haven't explored and our results could be potentially more exciting. However that is dangerous as we don't know what germs we carry that could harm any form of life out there, or what germs may harm us and our Earth.
The people aren't as interested in finding rock formations as they are about finding life on Mars. If we choose to land in an area well known, it will be less interesting.
Tax payers are funding this NASA trip, so they need to make sure that this exploration is as interesting as possible, something that will really catch the world's attention.
