Our story begins with our narrator captured as a prisoner by Spanish Inquisitors. Though he can only remembers bleak images of what happened to him, we are aware that he was sentenced to death by Judges part of the Inquisition. He is then knocked unconscious and taken to a dungeon.
As he is carried downstairs, he fades in and out of consciousness, and vaguely remembers being brought down stairs and being thrown into a cell. Instead of freaking out and panicking, he looks around the room marking the walls using a piece of fabric from his gown and sticking into the wall to show his starting point.
He started walking to examine more of the cell, but soon trips and falls at the edge of a massive deep pit in the middle of the cell. He's safe this time but he realized that the inquisitors are preparing to torture him(death by pit).
He back up to the wall of the cell and soon enough falls asleep again. He wakes up to find his cell has been lit up and realizes that he's been tied down to a table, with only his left hand free. Next to him, there's a plate of heavily spiced meat, which is being eaten at by tons of rats that have come up from the pit. He looks up in the air to see a pendulum slowly descending towards his belly.
Seeing that the bottom of the pendulum is razor sharp, he realizes that it is meant to cut him in half. He quickly comes up with an escape plan. He rubs the spiced meat all over the bands that are tying him down and allows the rats to chew him out of captivity, escaping just in time. Unfortunately all is not over. All of a sudden, the walls begin to glow and the shape of the room changes He realizes, then, that he's slowly being pushed into the pit by walls that are caving in.
When all hope seems left, and the only thing left to do is accept death, a miracle happens. He's pulled from falling to death by the hands of General Lasalle, leader of the French, who at this point have defeated the Spanish Inquisition and forced the remaining forces to surrender.
