  • Frederick Pollard
  • My name is Frederick Pollard. In 1919, one year after my debut, I led my team the Akron Pros to the Championship game in the NFL.
  • After that, I was a player-coach for the same team. The next year I became the head coach!
  • I think that sounds pretty interesting if I don't say so myself.
  • Accomplishments
  • Second, I got a full scholarship to Brown University in 1915.
  • Now that I am the head coach of the Akron Pros I want to tell you some things I'm quite proud of.
  • First, I was the first African American head coach in the NFL.
  • Last, I was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2005.
  • Importance
  • Now, you are thinking well this guy seems pretty important. Well I am because I helped the African Americans into the NFL but I can't say I was the only one.
  • Not only was Pollard a star football player but he was a three time county track champion and a gifted baseball player. He was also the first African American to play in the Rose Bowl and was 5' 9" and 165 lbs.
  • Not only was Frederick Pollard a great athlete but he got a degree in dentistry after going to Brown. Then he joined the military. After all this he was employed as the Lincoln University head coach for their football team.
  • After his professional football career Pollard was involved with many businesses such as F.D. Pollard and Co. Investment firm from. In 1935 he founded the New York Independent News. Frederick Pollard died from a short illness on May 11, 1986
