What is it?
Lack of memory
We better go ask the Giver.
Surveillance of the citizens
Within the community there is an extreme lack in memory. This is because only one person knows all of it, and that's the giver. This causes dystopia in the community because if the elders come across something the have never faced before they have to go to the giver for advice which is extremely inefficient.
The elders monitor everything, they have cameras everywhere. This creates a dystopia by giving the residents of the community no privacy. The elders also make announcements and orders with loud speakers throughout the community which gives the people very few freedoms.
Most of the community thinks release is a happy time for elders and new children, but when Jonas asks the Giver what release is he then understands how bad it really is. This causes dystopia because the elders are deciding to kill the old and the young instead of letting them live.
