Johnny challenges Ponyboy's and Johnny's friendship when he goes to the hospital and the nurse tells Ponyboy that Johnny might die. This helps Ponyboy grow and be tougher, and helps him realize how great Johnny really was. Ponyboy likes Johnny alot and they are best friends. So it was really hard for Ponyboy to take in the loss of Johnny.
Ponyboy is brave jumping into to the fire and frantic because he only has a couple minutes to get the kids out of the church. Johhny and Ponyboy are affected by this because a piece of burning wod fell on Johnny's back so he will no longer be able to walk and he might die. Also, Ponyboy is Johnny's best friend and since Johnny dies because of the fire Ponyboy becomes sad and depressed.
