The maids took orders from Penelope because the house seemingly had no master at the time. Odysseus killed the maids because they had done what they had been told to do their entire lives, follow directions.

  • Welcome to the Epic Debate! Today's topic is the Odyssey, specifically Odysseus' Decision to Kill the Twelve Maids.
  • The maids had been taught to follow orders from Odysseus and his family their entire lives. When Odysseus hadn't returned from the Trojan War, the entire household thought he was dead. The maids took orders from Penelope because the house seemingly had no master at the time. Odysseus killed the maids because they had done what they had been told to do their entire lives, follow directions.
  • Odysseus' twelve maids were incredibly disloyal to him . They slept with the very men who had eaten away his estate for years on end. They also spoke against Odysseus, Telemachus, and Penelope. Therefore, Odysseus had every right to kill his maids. They were his property. It was a heroic act of justice for Odysseus to hang the maids who had conspired with his enemies.
