Dred Scott was a slave in Illinois for a long time. His owner was an army doctor and took Dred with him to many places.
Dred Scott ended up in Wisconsin a free state but a problem arose his owner died. Dred filed a lawsuit in hopes of becoming a free man.
After his owner died he went to court to fight for his freedom (abolitionists helped him) His case ended up at the Supreme Court. But in 1857 the court declared Scott not free because he was considered property. This was Dred Scott VS Sanford
Dred Scott left court feeling unpositive and low on confidence but little did he know he would eventually become free.
Dred died 9 months later so he became free in heaven.
