  • Maple Street on a late September evening around 6:30 PM. Everything is normal in the the small town until moments later.
  • Maple St.
  • A flash of light plays on both their faces and then moves down the street past lawns and porches and rooftops and then disappears. (Serling, 668)
  • Maple St.
  • What was that, a meteor? (Serling, 668)
  • Steve, what was that? (Serling, 668)
  • PM
  • The roar wipes out power on Maple Street, and neighbourhood becomes frantic.
  • Maybe some sort of electrical storm or something. (Serling, 669)
  • Operator, operator, something's wrong on the phone, operator! (Serling, 668)
  • Can't get a thing on the radio. Not even the potable. (Serling, 669)
  • Steve tries starting his car with no luck, but when Mr. Goodman tries starting his it fails and moments later starts on it's own. Suspicious things start happening on Maple Street.
  • "You keep your distance-all of you." (Serling, 674)
  • "I don't understand" (Serling, 673)
  • I just don't understand it. I tried to start it and it wouldn't start. You saw me. All of you saw me. (Serling, 673)
  • Nothing except one car-yours! (Serling, 674)
  • A figure approaches, and all become fearful of the mysterious "monster", that turns out to be Pete Van Horn who ends up getting shot down.
  • It's a monster! It's a monster! (Serling, 678)
  • We may need this. (Serling, 678)
  • A shotgun? (Serling, 678)
  • Others are quick to judge when Charlie's lights suddenly turn on, and all are supicious of where little boy Tommy went.
  • You killed him Charlie. You shot him dead. (Serling, 279)
  • How come you're the only one with lights now? (Serling, 680)
