Storyboard Text

  • The Tariff Debate
  • It will help the American economy!
  • We shouldn't have to pay more for non-American goods! It will only support the North...
  • New Tariff
  • I propose that imported goods should be taxed!
  • The South's plan
  • This new tariff is outrageous. I feel that we should have the right to nullify any laws we don't like.
  • I agree as well. We might as well not even be part of this government anymore. In case of things getting worse, we should probably plan to get away and form our own new government.
  • This was a tariff that the southern states opposed because this tariff wouldn't help them as a region. They weren't thinking of the nation but rather their region as well.
  • Jackson tries to compromise
  • The southern states seem to be unhappy about this. I will not take away this tariff but rather lower it. Maybe they will be happier.
  • Jackson and congress pass the new high tariff to support the American economy. The tariff is taxing imported goods so people will buy from America. It will help the economy as a whole and keep U.S. dollars within the nation.
  • The Force Bill
  • The southern states were unhappy with this because they would have to spend more money buying from the northern states. They planned to nullify any laws that they disagreed of. Many states began to nullify laws Congress made. They also had a plan to secede from the U.S. if needed.
  • Surprise Victory
  • Jackson didn't even follow through on his threat.
  • Jackson relaxes the tariff to try and compromise with the southern states. Unfortunately the southern states were still unhappy. They didn't want a lower tariff they wanted none. This made Jackson unhappy.
  • Still too high... we want none!
  • Jackson was outraged at the southern states' behavior. He passed an unnecessary bill reminding the civilians that he will use force on the citizens of America if they do not follow the rules. He did not need to do this because the constitution already gave him the power to do so.
  • He's so angry with the southern states. I thought he would support it since he was from there!
  • I am very upset with the southern states! Let's pass a bill explaining that I can use the army and navy to make them follow the laws and pay taxes!
  • Jackson then did not use the force bill against the southern states, making them get away with their behavior. They in fact did not secede from the U.S. They continued to trouble the government after the threat was not put into action.
  • Onto the next law to complain about!
