In this scene Calpurnia is handing a letter from Aunt Alexandra to Atticus explaining that the kids are missing, when really they are in the courthouse without anyone knowing.
Atticus finds out the kids are in the stands and wants to send them home with Cal to eat, the kids plead to come back and watch, so Atticus said since they heard most of it, why not come back after dinner.
Calpurnia told Aunt Alexandra where they were and she nearly fainted. Aunt Alexandra felt hurt that Atticus was ok with letting Scout hear about rape.
When they all arrive back, they are surprised to see that their seats were saved and also that people were still there several hours later.
Tom Robinson was pleaded guilty..this is when Jem grows up a bit..he realizes how messed up the world is. Atticus whispers something to Tom, packs his stuff, and leaves.
Scout, Jem, and Dill saw African Americans standing in the stands to honor Tom Robinson and watch him after everybody left.
