  • The Aftermath
  • Battle for Tennessee
  • Chickamauga Creek
  • Of all Lee’s troops, fewer than 5,000 made it up the ridge. Although, the ones that did make it were quickly defeated by union troops. At the Battle of Gettysburg itself, over 28,000 Confederate Forces were killed or wounded. This battle was a Union win and therefore strengthened the Republicans politically.
  • The Battle of Chattanooga
  • After multiple Union wins, intense fighting erupted near Chattanooga in Tennessee. If the union forces could capture both sides of Chattanooga the union could then control a major railroad in the south that heads to Atlanta.
  • Grant and the South
  • During 1863, general Rosecrans of the Union army outmaneuvered the confederate army and its general Braxton Bragg. Bragg launched an attack on union forces and soon “smashed through part of union defenses”.
  • Grant Becomes General in Chief
  • HAH you're not the only one!
  • Lincoln makes the choice to send Meade’s troops to help Rosecrans in Chattanooga. Lincoln did this knowing if he could get the Union to capture a major railroad.
  • As General Grant’s first action in power was to rush troops to Chattanooga for the Battle in November. He ordered his troops to attack Confederate positions on Lookout Mountain, which is successful because Union forces drive the Confederate forces out of the mountain.
  • To Chattanooga we go!
  • As General in Chief, Grant had met his two main goals for the Union by the spring of 1864. The first was the capture of Vicksburg at Virginia. The second was the capture of Chattanooga at Tennessee which cleared a gateway for the invasion of Georgia. Between these two things, Lincoln felt it necessary to promote Grant to Lieutenant General- a position no one has had since George Washington.
