A group of girls, including Abigail, Tituba and Betty were caught practicing witchcraft in the forest by Paris. They were dancing and were thought to be naked. Witchcraft was illegal at the time.
Betty is lying in bed unresponsive and Paris is sitting with her. He does not want anyone to find out that people in his house had been practicing witchcraft. Whilst everyone is at church, the girls from the woods come to visit her. Abigail threatens to murder anyone who speaks of the night before. She starts screaming about wanting her mother who had died previously and tries to jump out of the window. The girls stop her, but the town hears what is going on and rush to the bedroom. Reverend Hale is called to inspect Betty for witchcraft. He confirms this and the girls admit and start naming names of people who are "working for the devil" in order to shift the blame.
Tituba is accused and a group of people from the town go to her. She is whipped until she admits. She believes that if she denies she will be hung. She then has to name another involved.
Everyone named is put on trial which leads to half of Salem on trial for witchcraft. If they admit they would be spared, but again would have to name others. If they did not and tried to protect their good name they would be hung. The group of girls lead by Abigail would start screaming and faint if they sensed the devil within the person. Judge Danforth lead the proceedings.
Elizabeth Proctor is accused and Reverend Hale comes to inspect their house. He asks them whether they know their commandments, but John forgot about adultery. He has a look around the house and finds the doll that Mary Warren made for Elizabeth in court. He finds a needle stuck inside of it. which leads to Mary Warren being accused. However, the family suspect Abigail, but with no proof Elizabeth is arrested.
Elizabeth Proctor is taken away along with many others. She tells John to look after the children and John reassures her that he will see her soon
