  • Brandings
  • Restricted thought
  • Dehumanization
  • If someone makes a mistake, they get branded in 1 of 5 places based on their mistake, and called "flawed"
  • Cornelius
  • If you say what you're thinking and it's different than what the guild/judge believe, you're flawed. This alludes to "precision of language" in the Giver.
  • Perfection
  • Flawed people are extremely dehumanized. On the bus, a flawed man was dying and no one acknowledged it at all. If you help a flawed, you are flawed.
  • Acceptance
  • In my novel, Celestine's grandfather said very wise things to her. He said things that stuck with her and led her to believe very optimistic things. His name was Cornelius, much like Cornelius- a wise man in the Bible who converted people to Christianity and shared smart morals and values.
  • Perfection is a big topic in my novel. If you're not perfect, you're flawed and being flawed makes you a "monster."
  • After being named flawed herself, Celestine realized how unfair the system is. She realized that the flawed aren't bad people or monsters, that they're just people who did what was right and stood by what they believed in. The sick man had brandings and appeared to be a terrible person who doesn't deserve to be treated like a human, who doesn't deserve help. This leads me to the main theme of my novel: You can't judge people based on how they appear.
