Storyboard Text

  • Background Information
  • Hi I am Richard Nixon and I will be your next president!
  • Peace with Honor
  • Is this a good deal?
  • Another Approach
  • The Vietnam War had been a war that the U.S underestimated their enemy. By 1968, Americans voted for change. They did not want to continue fighting the war. In November, the American people elected Nixon as president.
  • The Start of Ending the War, 1969
  • Nixon entered with a mandate to change the course of the Vietnam War. Nixon sent Kissinger to Paris. Purpose was to start discussing peace w/ North Vietnamese reps. Proposed that in exchange for ending the back and forth bombing, both South & North Vietnam would make an agreement to withdraw their troops.Stated that South Vietnam would remain Independent.
  • America Media pushing to End War
  • North Vietnamese rejected this offer as a “farce,” saying they were prepared to remain in Paris “until the chairs rot.”When diplomacy failed to bring about “peace with honor,” Nixon decided to try another approach known as Vietnamization. The plan for Vietnamization set three main goals for South Vietnam: self-government, self-development, and self-defense.
  • End Result
  • Thank you for allowing me to be the President of the United States. Because of the recent events that have occurred, I would like to resign from my position.
  • However, the North rejected this idea (peace with honor). With this, Nixon created another approach also known as Vietnamization. Nixon considered several military options to pressure North Vietnam to negotiate, such as bombing. Many massacres and shootings occured.
  • Don't shoot me!!!!
  • The Pentagon Papers resulted in the War Powers Resolution and led to Nixon's resignation. From there, representatives of the U.S, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and the Viet Cong signed the Paris Peace Accords. The soldiers finally came home, however, most people did not find them as heros.
