  • Kino and Juana wake up at dawn and make breakfast as Kino hears the Song of Family in the village of La Paz.
  • Climax
  • Coyotito is stung by a scorpion and needs medical assistance, but the family cannot afford the doctor for the treatment.
  • Falling action
  • Kino gets shut out by the doctor and goes to the sea to find a pearl in hopes of healing Coyotito. The neighbors and city people find out that he has found the pearl and try to take advantage of him. He tries to sell the pearl. but the pearl buyers cheat him and the robbers try to steal it from him.
  • Resolution
  • One early morning, Juana takes the pearl and runs to the beach in an attempt to throw the pearl. Kino follows and beats her. Shortly after, Kino kills a man and must flee the village. His canoe was destroyed, so he must go back and was met with his house burning down. Juana, Coyotito, and Kino run to Juan Tomas's house and hide there.
  • Kino and his family run up the mountain to escape the trackers that were following them. He tried to create false trails, so he would lose them. His family stopped at a cave and settled there. Kino had a plan to kill the trackers, but before he could initiate it, Coyotito cried and was shot in the head.
  • Kino and Juana return to the village dully as the villagers crowded them. They trudged to the shore with Coyotito in Juana's arms and Kino throws the pearl as far as he could back into the Gulf.
