The communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu ruled over Romania. His control was a dictatorial regime and controlled the country with an Iron grip. He also caused many problems for his people due to food shortages that he caused.
Nicolae Ceausescu used his secret police to monitor his entire country to insure no rebellions. Although the secret police crushed all open opposition there was still a large amount of general dissent. This is shown when thousands of peaceful demonstrators were killed by the secret police.
The people then openly rebelled against Nicolae Ceausescu and rather than the military stopping the uprising they joined the revolt. Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife was captured on the 22nd of December and executed on Christmas day. Ceausescu was succeeded by Ion Iliescu who played a major part in the rebellion.
