German U-boats sinking merchant ships with Americans on them. The Lusitania was sunk with 128 Americans on it without warning. A total of 1,198 people died on the Lusitania.
One pf the causes of WW1 was nationalism. Some European powers put national interest first regardless of the consequences. Pride in Germany's rapid growth and military power led Kaiser Wilhelm II to seek an overseas empire for his country.
Another cause of WW1 was Militarism. When Germany modernized its army and added to its navy , Britain felt it had to the same. Other major powers did the same. The nations of Europe were in a full-scale military buildup.
