Storyboard Text

  • Ahhh! Cuba is mine and you will do exactly what I say!
  • Cuba's military is getting stronger!
  • Oh my!
  • We must protect our families!
  • I am authorizing secret training!
  • This is Fidel Castro. In 1959 he defeated Cuba's corrupt dictator Fulgencio Batista. Immediately after gaining power, Castro established ties with the Soviet Union.
  • I'm making some changes!
  • Cuba is only 90 miles from the United States. Communist being so close to home worried many Americans. Americans were also worried because thr soviets were building a stronger military in Cuba.
  • With the whole country onedge President Eisenhower had authorized the CIA to secretly train and arm a group of Cuban exiles, known as La Brigada, to invade the island.
  • Wait! Come Back!
  • When Kennedy became president he agreed to to the operation with some changes.
  • On April 17, 1961, some 1,400 armed Cuban exiles landed at the Bay of Pigs on the south coast of Cuba. The invasion was a disaster.
  • Kennedy canceled their air support to keep the United States’ involvement a secret; and the expected popular uprising never happened. Within two days, Castro’s forces killed or captured almost all the members of La Brigada.
