Storyboard Text

  • Hayley Meyer
  • Dispatch. We have a car crash. One in critical condition.
  • Later...
  • Then we believe the best choice is to pull her life support.
  • Missouris law clearly states that there needs to be clear, undoubted proof that someone would resist further treatment in order for that choice to be made. In this case there is no proof.
  • I am sad to announce, Mr. and Mrs.Cruzan that your daughter, Nancys condition looks very poor. There is no sign of recovery.
  • Then we'll sue!
  • Oh.. I'm afraid the states law prevents me from allowing you to do that...
  • December 6, 1989. Rehnquist court
  • This couple has been forced to continue to see their daughter in pain, being restricted in pulling her life support.
  • The court will hear Cruzan v. Director, Missouri Department of Health
  • There is also no proof that she would request to continue treatment either.
  • No. There is no constitutional problem with this law.
  • June 25, 1990
  • Do the Cruzan have any constitutional backing for a right to refuse treatment to their daughter?
