  • Harmatia/Tragic Flaw: John is respectable, but he feels guilty about his one secret sin.
  • I've always thought of myself as a good man, but I can't believe I lusted after my poor, young servant Abigail and cheated on my dear, sweet wife. I'm a sinner. I'm as bad as that hypocrite, Rev. Parris, who's made me hate going to church.
  • John, you know you still want me!
  • Hubris/Extreme Pride: John's hatred for hypocrisy makes him hesitate to point the finger at Abigail, since he sees himself as a guilty man also.
  • John Proctor as Tragic Hero
  • It's incredible that the court listens to these girls and is arresting people for witchcraft. You must go to court and tell them that Abigail told you it had nothing to do with witchcraft.
  • But, Elizabeth, I'm afraid they'll take Abigail's word over mine...
