  • He didn't want to be a hypocrite and he let his shame prevent him from helping his neighbors.

  • Abigail is becoming a big threat to the town and him personally by accusing people of witchcraft.

  • He decided to come clean because it was the only thing that he could do to help.

  • He has to confess and sin or tell the truth and die. If he lies he makes his friends look bad.

  • The audience feels pity because John was only trying to do the right the right thing and was hung for it.
