  • Oh, John
  • Hamartia: John Proctor is well-respected man, but he hates hypocrites. His flaw is that he had a secret affair with Abigail and he's also a hypocrite.
  • I'm a married man and I feel guilty on having an affair with Abigail Williams. 
  • Hubris: John Hesitates to go to court to testify against Abigail. His feelings of hypocrisy keep from accusing another person.
  • John Proctor as Tragic Hero
  • I don't want people thinking I'm a fraud. I don't want to ruined my good name.
  • I can't believe someone will do this to me! It's probably Abigail who is trying to get rid of me!
  • Anagnorisis: John's wife Elizabeth was charged  with witchcraft, and John realizes that Abigail wants his wife dead, so she can take her place. 
  • Peripeteia: John is forced to admit aduttery with Abigail, so the court understands her motives for wanting Elizabeth dead. 
  • Elizabeth, please confess... 
  • If she does confess, I still want her dead!
  • Nemesis: John feels like he's already a sinner, agrees to confess to witchcraft to save his life. He can't go through with it, though, because he knows it's wrong. He realizes that he still a good person, not a hypocrite, and his conscience is clear.
  • I don't want the girls to accuse me on witchcraft.
  • I give up on God. This town is going crazy and no one will listen to me.
  • I hate this town.
  • Catharsis: Since John won't lie, he's hanged for witchcraft alongside other good people. People felt sad to see good people die.
  • I'm a good man, but I'm not making my children ending up with a bad name.
  • Why me? I didn't do anything.
