Arveragus, a prosperous and courageous knight, desired a wife. He finds a beautiful maiden named Dorigen, and they marry, vowing to respect each other and practice strict forbearance towards another's words and actions.
Sometime after their wedding, the knight went off to England and was gone for two years. In his absence, his beloved wife wept and was filled with sorrow, longing for her husbands return. She became apprehensive for her husbands safety.
One day, Dorigen went on a picnic at a dance with some friends. When they arrived at the dance, Aurelius, a strong handsome man who has always secretly loved Dorigen, confessed his love to her. She turned him down abruptly.
Aurelius was so devastated from the rejection, and returned home where he elapsed from despondency. He suddenly fell ill, and his brother took care of him for two years. Suddenly, his brother finds a solution to the dilemma.
He remembered a student who claimed to have deciphered the secret codes of magic found in rare books. Aurelius went to the student-magician and promised a payment of 1,000 pounds if his magic cleared the coast of rocks. The student-magician agreed, and the deed was performed.
