Seventy-Seventh year i've been in the lottery
The character's name Mr. Graves in “The Lottery” are symbolic of tombstones and death.
Therefore, the three legged stool may symbolize the past, present, and future because the tradition of the lottery started in the past. Also, it’s an event that people are preparing for and it is occurring at that moment. Finally, it’s an event that is expected to take place in the future.
The symbol that represents my own life is a flower
This implies that when entering the lottery, one is given chances. In this case, if one’s name is draw they have a less chance of life. Death is automatically thrown someone’s way. This lottery is what determines when death shall go down one’s path.
This reveals that he, like a tombstone, will mention and say who is going to die or who is officially dead. Once a person’s name is drawn, it’s official that they are going to die. Mr. Graves is then the one to let others know of the news, just like a tombstone.
Therefore, a flower is a perfect symbol to symbolize the blooming and growth of one’s mind and a person themselves. If a person is patient, they can grow mentally and emotionally.
