One Christmas, Waverly's brother got a chess set. He taught her how to play and Waverly ended up beating her brother at the games they played.
Because she kept defeating her brothers, Waverly moved on to more experienced opponents. Lau Po was an old man who taught her some of the secrets to chess helping her to become a more advanced, fierce competitor.
With Lau Po's teaching, Waverly won many chess games, even becoming a national champion!
But because of her success, her mother, Lindo, bragged about her wherever they went. One day at the market, Waverly got mad and exploded on her mother. She eventually quit chess altogether.
Years later, Waverly got engaged for the second time to Rich and is afraid to tell her mother because she thinks Lindo will disapprove. They all have a dinner together, and Rich did not do well. This makes Waverly worry more.
Waverly finally gained up enough nerve to tell her mother about the engagement, and Lindo says she knew the whole time.
